I wanted to kiss Depay, Van Gaal says
Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal said he wanted to kiss Memphis Depay after the Dutch midfielder scored two goals and set up the third for Marouane Fellaini in the team’s 3-1 win over Club Bruges in the first leg of their Champions League playoff at Old Trafford on Tuesday.
Memphis, who was deployed in his favourite starting position on the left rather than as a traditional No. 10, showed the kind of form that led United to pay PSV Eindhoven a reported 25 million pounds (USD39 million) for the 21-year-old in May.
“I want to kiss him tonight, because when you score two goals and you give the assist also, then normally in the world you are the hero,” said Van Gaal.
The United boss said Depay was always trying to be better.
“Yes, I think that makes also a difference with other players: he is never satisfied and I like that, because you have to know what you are doing and also what you can do and then your desire to improve is higher – and that’s Memphis.”
However, Van Gaal said it was still a team effort.
“When you score a goal then you are the hero. I think we are (on) the pitch to make goals as a team.”
Manchester United play the second leg in Bruges on August 26th.
