IAAF, AK in partnership to train sprint coaches in Africa

World athletics governing body the IAAF have partnered with Athletics Kenya (AK) to train over 16 coaches drawn from across Africa ahead of the 2017 World Relays in Bahamas.

As the third edition of the championships set to take place April 22-23 draws nearer, Ralph Mouchbahani, a senior lecturer at the IAAF, says they are hoping the training will help raise the profile of the continent in short distance races.

“There are four levels involved but we’re currently working on the second. Here, we want coaches to understand the high performance demands of the sport and what it takes to develop an athlete from a junior age group to seniors’ age group.

“The third level targets more of the performance of these juniors once they develop. Level four is a pure specialist group meaning the coach is now ready to address the sprints or the hurdles group or even the relays,” Mouchbahani explained.

Ibrahim Hussein, a former Boston and New York Marathon winner, said he hopes to see more Kenyan athletes embrace the short distance relays.
