IAAF delegates in Nairobi for maiden WU20 assessment

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has sent a high-level delegation to Nairobi for assessments on preparations for the 2020 World Under-20 Championships.

The team, which is making its maiden visit ahead of the July 2020 event, is already in the country and will hold meeting sessions with Kenyan officials on Wednesday and Thursday.

The delegation is led by IAAF’s Head of Event Operations Toni Jorba, Executive Director of Communications Jackie Brock-Doyle, Chief Information Officer An Dang Duy along with Technical Delegates Gemma Castano and Imre Matrahaz.

Others are Frederick Sanchez, the IAAF Platforms and Distribution Operations Manager, Mark Fulton, who is the Executive Producer for IAAF Productions and Luis Saladie, the IAAF’s Head of Competitions.

The delegation will meet senior officials from the Ministry of Sports and Heritage, led by Cabinet Secretary Hon. Rashid Echesa and Principal Secretary Amb. Kirimi Kaberia, and the Athletics Kenya (AK) executive, led by President, Lt. Gen.(Rtd) Jackson Tuwei.

“This visit is extremely important for Kenya and will effectively kick off an extremely important leg of our preparations to host yet another successful global competition,” AK President Tuwei said in the statement.

The delegation is also expected to address a press conference touching on their visit at a time and location to be confirmed in due course.

Kenya was awarded the rights to host the biennial competition after successfully hosting the 2017 IAAF World Under-18 Championships at Kasarani.

Kenya’s bid was endorsed by IAAF council in July, 2018.
