Igembe Boys High School are the new Meru Open rugby sevens champions after they edged last year’s winners Miathene Boys 5-0 in Sunday’s final.

Miathene Boys were on the losing side of another final, slumping to a 61-23 loss to Meru School who thus defended their basketball crown as Meru polytechnic defeated KEMU University 19-12 to lift the handball title.

Igembe Boys saw off St Cyprian 7-0 in the quarters, humbled Meru School 12-0 in the last four Miathene before finishing off their triumphant run with victory over Miathene.

It was their maiden title at the annual competition after 11 editions with head coach Kelvin Kirimi asserting it could be start of bright future for his side.

“Motivation, discipline and high training has enabled my boys to win and now the focus is to try carrying this form into the School Games and hopefully we can reach the national level,” Kirimi said.

Miathene routed Kegonge High School from Embu County 36-0 in the quarters before edging Marsabit County’s Dakabaricha High School 19-10 but ultimately fell short against Igembe Boys.
