Improving Chemelil confident of evading the chop

Charles Odero, head coach of Chemelil Sugar FC believes that his improving side have what it takes to evade the dreaded relegation axe and will fight to the last man to safeguard their top-tier status.

The sugar millers have picked two points from their last matches fighting to a 1-1 draw against Sofapaka and posting a similar outcome against Western Stima in Kisumu on Saturday.

Though the results have fallen short of victory, Odero who has seen his side rooted at the basement this term, largely compounded by the financial crunch, maintains there is every reason to be upbeat.

“We used to be only 13 players and each player was confident of getting a slot, but now they are many and they have to fight for those positions. That is why they are now giving their all,’’ Odero recounted in a post-match interview with Citizen Digital.

According to Odero, their new found believe should help them get wins on the road and at home saying his boys have accepted the kind of life they are going through without a sponsor and are ready to play.

Chemelil Sugar is one of the four KPL clubs, formerly enjoying the sponsorship of sugar companies which are equally reeling from the financial shock waves.

Other than the Awasi based club, others are Muhoroni Youth, SoNy Sugar and Nzoia Sugar.

The Millers at one point risked being expelled from the top-tier after handing two walkovers to Bandari and KCB.

Failure to honour another match would see them automatically kicked out of the league but with six points from 19 matches, Odero hopes the turnaround will be steady.

They tackle Posta Rangers this weekend at the Muhoroni grounds.
