Ingwes Aswani targets title, Golden Boot

AFC Leopards’ leading goal scorer Kepha Aswani, is out to fire the team to a first title since 1998 and collect the SportPesa Premier League (SPL) Golden Boot award at the end of the season.

The former Thika United striker who guided them to third, their best ever league finish in 2009 has already notched thrice in the league for title-chasing Ingwe and has now set himself a ten-goal target by the end of the first leg.

“I wouldn’t say it’s too ambitious. We still have eight matches left to play before the turn of the second leg so it’s possible,” Aswani told Citizen Digital.

He rued the missed chances in front of goal that saw Ingwe succumb to a first SPL defeat of the season to Nairobi City Stars on Sunday, saying most of their training drills have been geared towards clinical finishing as the team prepares to face bottom-placed Sofapaka.

“Every team that does well needs players with exceptional attributes. Some players are good in distributing key passes and assisting while others are good in front of goal. As a striker I play to score for the team and obviously for myself too,” said the former Kamukunji High alumnus added.

His coach Ivan Minnaert said he did not doubt Aswani’s goal poaching instincts but urged the forward to start converting more chances into goals, citing the missed chances against City Stars.

Lowly Sofapaka will be at the mercy of the agile forward when the two sides meet on Saturday, and with Batoto ba Mungu having conceded 12 goals already this season, there could not be a better opponent for Aswani to close in on run-away top scorers Obadiah Ndege and Wycliffe Ochoma, both on five goals.
