Injera man to watch as Shujaa out to conquer Vegas

Winger Collins Injera is expected to be the star of the Kenyan show when the Shujaa get their fifth round of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series underway in Las Vegas.

The Mwamba RFC ace missed the previous legs in Cape Town, Sydney and Hamilton thanks to a hamstring injury that kept him out but returns to give head coach Innocent Simiyu’s side a different dimension.

The Shujaa set up has been conspicuously devoid of a star player capable of taking games by the scruff of the neck yet Injera’s pace and incision make him just that as the Kenyans look to add to their series points tally in Vegas.

The Mwamba winger is the most capped player in the team with 72 appearances to his name, has the most points in the team with 1266 and is the leading national top try-scorer with 246 touchdowns.

The decorated Collins Injera is second in the all time HSBC Rugby Series top tries scorer behind English Dan Naughton who has 277 tries.

Last season he guided Shujaa to win the Challenge Trophy in Las Vegas which Kenya won by beating Samoa 21-14.

Injera has only played in the opener of this season at the Dudai Sevens, where he gave an immense performance with Kenya earning 10 points.

He scored two unconverted tries which made him the top try scorer in the Kenyan team alongside Dennis Ombachi, Eden Agero, Skipper Oscar Ayodi and Samuel Oliech.

He was also second in the stats of the most points in Kenyan team with 10 points behind fullback Samuel Oliech who had 22 points.

Lacking the services of Collins Injera in the Cape Town Sevens, Shujaa performed poorly collecting only three points en route to finishing 12th in the 17-team log.

Injera returns to the team alongside his Mwamba RFC team mate Billy Odhiambo who has not played a minute this season.

Coach Innocent Simiyu will be looking to get his teams’ target of 10 points and reaching the Main Cup quarter finals.

Shujaa who are eighth in the log with 35 points after the first four rounds of the season, will kick off Las Vegas Sevens against France at 2.44 am (EAT) on Saturday.
