Injury free Manangoi, Yego set eyes on Worlds

Fully fit again World 1,500m champion Elijah Manangoi has told his rivals to be ready for tough battle in Doha, Qatar when the global competition starts in September.

The Rongai Athletics based Manangoi ran for the first time on Thursday since June 30 at the Prefontine Classic and reaffirmed his Doha intentions with a national title at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Shortly after clocking 3:37.36 to reclaim the title he first won in 2017, Manangoi confidently said he will be settling only for gold at the Khalifa International Stadium.

“I’m so happy that I’ve completely shaken off the hamstring injury that has kept me in the cold since June. I’m now very ready to defend my world title in Qatar.”

Being the champion, Manangoi has a direct ticket to Doha thus focus is on the remaining Diamond League legs before going for the global title defense.

On August 13 at the London Olympic Stadium during the 2017 World Championships, the 26-year old clocked 3:33.61 to stamp his authority in the distance, which he had settled for silver in the 2015 Beijing Worlds timing 3:34.63.

Yego can dream

Meanwhile, 2016 Olympics javelin silver medallist Julias Yego can dream bigger after overcoming a longtime injury that had derailed his season.
He defended his national title with an impressive throw of 84.16m, surpassing the minimum World Championships qualifying mark of 83.00m.

“I’m glad that progressively my form is coming back. I’m now more confident on the runway and generally I can only get better including in terms of technique. The pain is no more and it feels just great to so this without any discomfort,” said the 2015 Junior World Champion.

Yego is also targeting the African Games title in Morocco, with the overall Kenya athletics team now setting eyes on the continental fiesta that is already underway in the North African country.
