IOC issues ultimatum over Nock polls date

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has given the National Olympic Committee of Kenya until end of September to decide a new Executive Committee elections date.

In a letter sent to President and Secretary General of Nock, the IOC gave clear guidelines to the embattled national body whose exco are set to meet on Friday for the first time since a interim court order barring its May 5 polls was obtained.

In the letter, the Olympics governing body directed Nock to take ‘immediate’ steps for the Nock Elective General Assembly to resume and conclude as soon as possible.

“This Elective General Assembly, is simply the continuation of the meeting initially scheduled on 5 May 2017 and shall resume and conclude in the same conditions as when it was adjourned, with the same Electoral Board being responsible for conducting and monitoring the election process.

“Consequently, you should now only agree with the members of your NOC on the date on which the Elective General Assembly will resume and inform the members accordingly as well as the Electoral Board for it to resume its duties,” the IOC said.

Nock was further directed to forward all pending cases or disputes to the Elective General Assembly, if they cannot be resolved by the Electoral Board, in accordance to the constitution.

In this regard, the decision on whether Kenya Taekwondo Association (KTA), Kenya Rowing and Canoe Association (KRACA), Kenya Cycling Federation (KCF) and Kenya Badminton Federation will participate in the polls will depend entirely on the Elective General Assembly.

The four federations were denied Certificates of Registration since they presented various warring factions. The Registrar of Sports took the measure of declining to issue the documents in accordance to the Sports Act of 2013.

The detailed statement that comes on the back of reports some exco members had intentions up their sleeves to force through fresh notice for another General Assembly with new nominations.

The letter strikes a blow upon such motives and thus the initial Nock list of candidates’ remains with the same.

“Now that the legal obstacle that was preventing the NOC elections has been lifted by the High Court of Kenya, your cooperation and appropriate actions are expected for this process to resume and conclude smoothly, in good faith and without any further delay/unnecessary complications.”
