IOC orders Nock to resume May 5 elections

There will be no fresh nominations for the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (Nock) elections.

In a letter addressed to Nock president Dr Kipchoge Keino and his Secretary General Francis Kinyili Paul, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) strongly advised the National Olympic Committee to resume the May 5th Elective Assembly on September 29 to conclude the election process.

IOC emphasised that Center for Multiparty Democracy of Kenya (CMD) must conduct the elections without interference.

“We refer to your letter dated September 6 and the various communications that have circulated in relation to the same.  Consequently, we understand that the Electoral Board must be fully responsible now for conducting the elections process independently,” said Pere Miro the IOC Deputy Director General, Relations and the Olympic Solidarity Director.

On September 6, Nock held an Extra Ordinary Meeting at their headquarters along Mombasa road, where they agreed that candidates who had been locked out of the previous election can submit their papers to CMD.

Nock denied the May 5th Elective Assembly ever taking place, adding that they will issue a fresh notice with fresh nominations.

During the same meeting they also talked about the federations with disputes in court in regards to the election hoping that they could come up with an agreement so that they can vote on September 29.

IOC reminded Nock that any cases or disputes related to the elections that cannot be resolved by the Electoral Body must be referred to the Elective General Assembly for the final decision before voting takes place.

On the other hand Sports Registrar Rose Wasike threatened to nullify the election results if federation’s that have not complied with the Sports Act of 2013 are allowed to vote.

The CMD consulted the registrar’s office before issuing the list of voting federations. This means that again, the CMD will heavily rely on Rose Wasike’s advice going into the elections.

Nock officials had accused CMD of over stepping their stipulated mandate and have scheduled a meeting with the Electoral Body in regards to the elections.
