Is Gor Mahia destined to dominate Kenyan Football?

Gor Mahia have dominated local football headlines for spending Ksh4m on Rwandese striker Jacques Tuyisenge as they look to replace Michael Olunga who has reportedly signed for Swedish side Djurgarden IF.

The club is progressively attracting a host of talented, highly-prized local and international footballers and enjoy an enormous fan base despite isolated cases of ‘hooliganism’ experienced in past seasons.

And as result of that following K’Ogallo have been able to land lucrative sponsorship deals, boosting their financial muscle.

In a record breaking year for the club last season, k’Ogalo lost none of their 30 league matches (winning 24 and drawing 6) on their way to winning their 3rd consecutive Premier League title. Even more interestingly, they registered a goal difference of 48 which is about thrice as much as their nearest rivals.

Of the top 5 highest scoring forwards last season, 3 were from Gor Mahia.

Modern football has demonstrated that money equals success, a perspective that continues to anger many football fans globally.

The investments of billionaires Roman Abramovich, Naser El Khelaifi and Sheikh Mansour into Chelsea FC, Paris St. Germain (PSG) and Manchester City FC have catapulted their respective clubs’ rise as domestic and European forces.

Real Madrid have remained at the helm of football ranks because of their immense financial power. This answers the persistence question as to whether money automatically leads to success.

It is reported that Gor Mahia have received a Ksh70 million offer from Sportpesa in a bid to scuttle overtures from another betting company, Betway.

Whoever Gor chooses to settle with, the offer could only ensure Sirkal stay ahead of opponents in terms of financial abilities.

If Gor Mahia can reproduce the same kind of sleek football that was their trademark last season and extend their local success internationally, other clubs will have lots of catching up to do.
