Outgoing Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola has decribed it as an honour to be in charge of the German champions after lifting the DFB Pokal in his final game in charge.

Bayern beat Borussia Dortmund on penalties after a 120 minute goal-less stalemate in Berlin.

“Congratulation to the whole of Bayern Munich. Congratulation to the players, to the important people at Bayern – to the president, to the CEOs, the staff and the fans. It was a deserved win. But all I want to say is: It was a big honour to be coach at Bayern Munich and to be here in Germany.

“I was really happy Bayern Munich called me few years ago. Now I can say, it was a right decision to come to Munich and to coach at awesome club. I wish this club all the best for the next years. Bayern Munich will have a great future with these players and this mentality,” he said at his last post-match interview as the Bayern boss.

The Spaniard said he felt they deserved victory after, in his words, dominating, the match.

“Today we showed again our mentality, our character. We had a good possession game, but of course also BVB had some chances. But we dominated the game I think. I didn’t use our chances – this is what you have to do in a semi-final in Champions League or in a cup final.

“At the end everyone on the pitch was tired. And then penalty shootout is penalty shootout. Last time we lost against Dortmund, now we won. I am very happy! Big compliments to my players,” he asserted.

He now leaves to take over at Manchester City having failed to win the Champions League in his time at Munich in what remains a blot in his otherwise successful spell in charge of the Bavarian giants who were European champions and treble winners when he replaced Jupp Heynckes.
