Its down to character, says Olago after Kenya Cup triumph

KCB head coach Curtis Olago has praised his team’s character after winning their fourth Kenya Cup title in a row on Saturday.

Despite trailing Kabras 20-0 at half time the bankers fought back to win 28-25 in sudden death against a very stubborn Kabras side at the Nandi Bears Club and Olago says the spirited fight was down to the team’s togetherness and friendship among the players and technical bench.

“This was the hardest final I have ever played recently because we had to come from behind to win in sudden death,” he explained. “The players were a little bit worried after Rockie Aguko got injured but they came back stronger and won the match for him.”

He continued: “It takes great character and determination to win such a tough match against a very strong opponent.”

His opposite number Dominique Habimana has in the meantime urged his team to keep their heads high despite the defeat and promised to deliver the title next season because he believes in the talent at the club and the exciting project he’s building.

“We are definitely disappointed for not winning the final, especially having led for most of the time. These are lessons that happen in big competitions against tough opponents. I believe this team has character and the talent to come back stronger.

We don’t need to make many changes in the team; the players are talented and we will continue with the great project at hand and hopefully we’re still the team to break KCB’s dominance,” stated Habimana.

His sentiments were echoed by team captain Dan Sikuta who says they are still determined to break KCB.

“We came very close to winning the cup, we have a young squad that is very talented and we have learnt our lessons and we have to stay stronger and come back stronger next season,”Sikuta told Citizen Digital.
