Judge to decide Benzema Euro fate – Le Graet

French Football Federation President Noel Le Graet has said the judge will decide on whether Karim Benzema will take part on this summer’s European Championships in France.

Benzema has been embroiled in a scandal that has engulfed French football where it is alleged he blackmailed international team mate Mathieu Valbuena.

The case has been referred the the French justice system meaning Benzema is unlikely to be selected for the European Championships in June, until it is resolved

On the tournament itself, La Graet admitted anything less than the semi-final stage would be a huge disappointment for hosts France, and described the team as very strong.

He also insisted France is well equipped when it comes to the infrastructure needed to host the tournament and that all the teams will be made to feel at home.

NOEL LE GRAET

President, French Football Federation

“Everything is in place. Jacques Lambert and the federation have done a great work. We are very lucky because the stadiums have been built very quickly. We are not late like it has been the case for other competitions when the stadiums were being built until the very last minute. France is also very well equipped when it comes to airports, railway stations, transport network… So, there is no issue about this aspect of things. All the federations will be made to feel at home.

“And as for the sporting aspect, we are still preparing it. It is very important, because the games will remain the most important aspect of the competition. France will play two games in March, two games in May. There are talented players. I hope they will confirm the progress made two years ago in Brazil. France have today some very, very good players.

“I was so not expecting that question. Not at all (ironic). We shall let the judge make a decision. You know how much I love this young lad. I’d like all this to finish in a positive way. But it’s for the justice to decide.

(On whether anything less than a semi-final for France at Euro 2016 be disappointing?) “Yes, clearly. Finishing in the last four is the minimum for us. France need to get passionate about this, just like it happened in England for the Rugby World Cup or in Brazil, even if they haven’t had a great run. I believe France need this support. I believe we have a very strong France team, we keep improving, our youngsters play in the best clubs. I think we have what it takes to give a good account of ourselves.”
