Jurgen Klopp confirmed as new Liverpool boss

Former Borussia Dortmund Manager Jurgen Klopp has reportedly agreed to become Liverpool’s new manager, just days after Brendan Rodgers was sacked by the English Premier League club.

The Reds have called for a news conference on Friday morning where they are expected to formalise the former Borussia Dortmund head coach’s appointment.

Former Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti was also contacted about the role, but when he ruled himself out, focus shifted decisively to Klopp.

The path for the two-time Bundesliga winner was cleared on Thursday as Liverpool reshuffled their coaching team – with former player Gary McAllister leaving his first-team role, and assistant manager Sean O’Driscoll one of three coaches leaving Anfield.

Klopp is understood to be keen to bring in his own team, including his former Dortmund assistant, Bosnian Zeljko Buvac, who he played with at Mainz.

Rodgers’s contract at Liverpool was terminated moments after the Reds drew 1-1 against Everton at Goodison Park last weekend.

In a joint Fenway Sports Group statement, Principal Owner John W. Henry, Chairman Tom Werner and President Mike Gordon said: “We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Brendan Rodgers for the significant contribution he has made to the club and express our gratitude for his hard work and commitment.”

The statement added: “Although this has been a difficult decision, we believe it provides us with the best opportunity for success on the pitch. Ambition and winning are at the heart of what we want to bring to Liverpool and we believe this change gives us the best opportunity to deliver it.”

Rodgers was defiant in the post match press conference saying he felt no pressure and felt ‘nothing but secure’.

“I don’t feel any pressure whatsoever. I can honestly say that. And you guys have seen me now for a while. I think there is pressure to sell newspapers, I think there is pressure to make stories in the media and I understand and respect that because that’s your lives and that’s your jobs. For me my job is to worry about the team and that is the only pressure that I will ever feel,” said Rodgers.

Brendan Rodgers was reportedly told of his dismissal over the phone by Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon.

Former Chelsea and current Real Madrid Manager Carlo Ancelotti and former Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo had been named as favourites to take up the reigns at Anfield.
