Kabras coach Du Plessis bemoans suspension of league

Kabras Sugar RFC head coach Henley Du Plessis says the move by the Kenya Rugby Union to suspend all league matches will negatively affect all the rugby teams in the country.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, the South African tactician believes that the suspension will affect  teams’ rhythm and fitness thus affecting games when action resumes.

“We’ll keep them training for the coming weeks as we wait and see how it will go but it will be a long period for us all because we don’t know when we will resume,” explained Du Plessis.

“Training without having competitive matches will halt all the teams in different competitions in terms of form and consistency,” he added.

KRU made the decision to suspend the league following a directive by the Government, coming hot on the heels of the outbreak of the coronavirus.

“It will affect us in terms of fitness because the teams will be out of rugby for a while and with the season heading to the end we have to respect the directive of the union,” said Du Plessis.

“We’re also in the dark because we don’t know for how long the suspension will be and it will definitely affect our timetable and planning,” he claimed.

Kabras, together with KCB RFC, are in the semis of the 2019/2020 Kenyan Cup playoffs, but it remains unclear when the matches will be played following the pandemic.

The western-based side targets to reclaim  Kenya Cup title, which they lastly won in 2015 under the then head coach Charles Cardovillis.

They reached the Kenya Cup playoffs finals last year losing 25-13 to KCB.
