Kabras seal playoffs slot after Saracens no-show

Kabras Sugar finished top of the regular Kenya Cup standings with 49 points after they were handed a walkover by Impala Saracens at the Nandi Bears Sports Club on Saturday.

Saracens didn’t travel to Nandi to honour their last match of the regular season handing Kabras five points.

The development saw Kabras finish five points ahead of defending champions KCB RFC with both teams securing a home playoff semi-final match.

If Dominique Habimana’s  Kabras qualify for the playoff final they will host the duel as a reward of finishing atop the table.

Earlier at the same venue varsity side Strathmore Leos outclassed Masinde Muliro University (MMUST) 34-12 rising to fourth with 25 points after getting a bonus point.

Louis Kisia Leos scored six tries converting two against Ochieng’s charges two tries converting one.

Leos playing as the away side caught the home side by surprise in the 14th minute scoring their first try through Ugandan winger Dan Kisakyamukama with Brunson Madigu missing the conversion to make it 05-00.

The western based side atoned for their mistakes and responded with a try inside the posts, William Muhanji being the scorer with Norbert Lumbwani adding the extras to make it 07-05 for MMUST in the 19th minute.

Leos reclaimed their lead in the 21st minute after Bethewel Anami got a fine through ball from Madigu, running from the 21 metre line to score their second try and Madigu made no mistake converting to make it 12-07.

The varsity side would however not go down without a fight, Jadan Abdon scoring for a 12-12 draw by halftime even as they failed to convert

Louis Kisia words at halftime seemed to have sparked more fire in the belly of Leos as they scored two quick-fire tries after the break, Philemon Olang scoring a brace and Madigu converting one to make it 24-12 for the Leos.

They went further to land their fifth and sixth try through Maxwell Omondi missing the conversions to win the tie 34-12.

Meanwhile Menengai Oilers remain third in the league with 30 points after narrowly defeating Nondescripts 13-10 at the RFUEA grounds.

Oilers and Strathmore Leos join Kabras and KCB RFC in the Kenya Cup playoff semi-finals to be played next weekend.
