Kagawa helps Dortmund climb top of Bundesliga

Japan international Shinji Kagawa helped set up two goals as Borussia Dortmund beat Hertha Berlin 3-1 on Sunday to go back top of the Bundesliga, ahead of champions Bayern Munich, on goal difference.

Kagawa, who looks to have rediscovered his form this season, charged through in the 27th minute and sailed a perfect cross to the far post for Mats Hummels to head in.

The former Manchester United forward then chipped a brilliant pass for Matthias Ginter, whose cutback in the box found Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and the Gabon international had no trouble netting his third goal in three games this season.

The 26-year-old crowd favourite had won two Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012 with Dortmund before joining Manchester United for a hapless two-year spell and returned last year.

Hertha cut the deficit with substitute Salomon Kalou, who looked to be offside, tapping in on the rebound after a save from keeper Roman Buerki. Adrian Ramos scored in stoppage time to make sure Dortmund went top on goal difference.

VfL Wolfsburg are in third on seven after easing past Schalke 04 3-0 on Friday, with Manchester City signing Kevin De Bruyne watching in the stands ahead of his move to England.

The absence of the Belgium midfielder, who joined join City on Sunday for a Bundesliga record transfer, did not distract the Wolves as they took the lead when Dutchman Bas Dost volleyed the ball in from Christian Traesch’s cross in the 17th minute.

Teenager Leroy Sane squandered a good chance for Schalke from 10 metres before the hosts doubled their advantage when Sead Kolasinac brought down Luiz Gustavo and Ricardo Rodriguez sent keeper Ralf Faehrmann the wrong way with a well-taken penalty in the 59th minute.

Swiss defender Rodriguez then drove over a corner that Timm Klose volleyed in for Wolfsburg’s third goal in the 61st minute, with Schalke’s back line in disarray.

Wolfsburg, who also left out Inter Milan target Ivan Perisic, now have seven points from three games.
