Kajiado eying title after stopping Meru in KYISA Games

Kajiado County men football team launched their quest to reclaim their 2014 Kenya Youth Inter-county (KYISA) title on a high note thrashing familiar opponents Meru County 3-2, in a five-goal thriller as the competition entered second day on Tuesday at Unoa grounds in Wote town, Makueni County.

Meru took the lead in the 10th minute, Melvin Mwenda connecting a well executed corner into the net to make it 1-0, before Shadrack Muthomi smashed in a poorly punched ball 10 minutes later to extend the lead.

In the second half, Kajiado announced their emphatic comeback strategy with a goal just a minute into the pitch, through Suleiman Kengwa.

The 2014 champions head coach Emmanuel Ndegwa opted for new blood bringing on David Orumu in the 65th, whose impact was almost instant. Oruma restored parity three minutes later, through a well taken free kick, turning the tide against Meru.

Robert Rongo sealed the win 10 minutes to the stoppage, leaving worn-out opponents confused of the wasted early lead.

In an interview with Citizen Digital after the hard-fought win, Ndegwa charged his target is to win this year’s edition following a two year drought.

“Coming down 2-0 in the first half was not easy although I knew we could win the match. Now we have to focus on our next tie but we must end this drought,” said an upbeat Ndegwa.

On their way to clinch the inaugural title four years ago in Laikipia, Kajiado saw off  Meru in the semi finals.

In the volleyball, Garissa saw off Laikipia 3-0 sets despite protests from latter who alleged their opponents had fielded ineligible players.  The organising committee threw however confirmed the players as eligible after the match.

In ladies ties, Kiambu edged Kirinyaga 3-0 sets in their opening pool C clash, with other matches preliminary matches set for Wednesday.
