Kakamega County yet to honour Homeboyz sponsorship pledge

Kakamega Homeboyz will continue with their heavy recruitment even in the absence of the local government’s financial backing, chairman of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) club Cleophas Shimanyula has said.

The club that finished sixth last season has been among the busiest during the January transfer window despite having received no funds yet from Kakamega County who have pledged to sponsor them.

Shimanyula who has been the sole Homeboyz financier told Citizen Digital they have yet to receive any slight indication from the local administration to suggest they will honour their promise but will not sit on their laurels as the 2018 season fast approaches.

“We are going on with the recruitment of players which has cost us some large amounts of money but also we are ready for the county government to take charge at their own appropriate time,” Shimanyula said.

He added he is willing to surrender ownership of the club to the County should Governer Wycliffe Oparanya’s administration show that level of commitment as he only wants to see it ‘move forward’.

“We don’t even know how much money the County Government wants to pump in or the details of the contract itself. We cannot depend on them just yet,” he said.

Homeboyz finished eighth in their first top flight season in 2016 before climbing two places up to sixth at the close of last season.

They have already underlined their ambitious plans for the forthcoming season having made some shrewd signings including experienced Tusker FC trio Allan Wanga, Noah Wafula and defender James Situma.
