Kakamega Homeboyz players to take pay cut from next month

Kakamega Homeboyz players will be forced to take a 50% pay cut from next month in line with the club’s cost reduction plans meant to help the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) stay afloat amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The pandemic has shut down sporting activities across the globe, cutting out revenue streams for clubs with league and tournament resumption dates remaining unknown.

Homeboyz chairman Cleophas Shimanyula told Citizen Digital that players received their March salaries in full but the club has opted to revise their remuneration program as from next month.

“We have paid their March salaries in full but from next month, they will be receiving half of it. It was a tough decision to make considering that they are not benefiting from the allowances we give them while on duty. They are inactive at the moment and it’s a decision we arrived at after having a word with them.

“The pandemic has wreaked havoc not only to players but to businesses but we remain optimistic that the dust will settle soon. Once normalcy returns, they will continue earning their full salaries,” Shimanyula said.

Homeboyz were enjoying an impressive season, sitting second on the KPL table behind Gor Mahia FC, before the league was put on hold early March due to the coronavirus.
