Kakamega, St Peters win County rugby title

Kakamega High School successfully retained their rugby 15s title after defeating Koyonzo 14-5 in the boys’ final at the St Peters Mumias grounds on Saturday.

Defeat for Koyonzo ended a historic run for the minnows who will thus proceed to the Regional Games by virtue of finishing second.

En route to the finals, Kakamega had floored Musingu Boys 15-3 while Koyonzo pulled off a shock 13-3 victory over St Peters, exacting sweet revenge for the side that knocked them out last year in the same stage.

In the boys’ sevens, the hosts defeated Mukumu 26-5 in the final.

Kakamega coach Amos Wananga hailed his charges for the win and urged them to turn their focus on the upcoming Regional competitions.

“We worked for this and now we must focus on the the next stage. We want to win all the way to the Nationals,”Wananga said.

In the girls’ handball, Mukumu Girls also defended their title by beating Epanja girls from Mumias east 28-16. Mukumu and Epanja have all qualified to the regionals while Musingu boys and Kivaywa have made to regionals by virtue of reaching finals.
