Kameta calls for support as Hit Squad embarks on rigorous preparations

The Boxing Association of Kenya chairman, John Kameta, has urged the government and the National Olympic Committee of Kenya to offer support to his federation as they start preparations for the Commonwealth Games set for Gold Coast, Australia, from April 4-15.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Kameta said they are planning to have the team participate in a number of championships before the games.

“We have been invited for the India championship and we are trying to organize how the team will participate, after that we will decide who will be selected depending on the performance because we have been given eight slots,” he said.

The trials ended on Saturday at the Kaloleni Social Hall where a team of 10 male and two female boxers will represent Kenya.

“From India, we will go straight to the camp, and in the beginning of March, we will want to take them in another camp in Mauritius for more training that will also involve facing their national team. After that they will be ready for the games,” charged Kameta .

In the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, an awful nine-man Hit Squad returned home with a single medal, a bronze, courtesy of Olympian Benson Njagiru Gicharu of Kenya Police.

Kameta, however, believes that the current team is capable of doing well. “This is a great team; a mixture of young and experienced boxers which is good for continuity. We just want to urge the government and the National Olympic Committee of Kenya to facilitate us for the two training camps.We won’t disappoint during the competitions,” the boxing boss told Citizen Digital.
