Kamworor craving for Olympic medal

World Half marathon record holder Geoffrey Kamworor is yearning for his maiden Olympic medal in next year’s  Games to be held in Tokyo, Japan.

Kamworor had a fantastic season setting a new World Half marathon record of 58:01 at the Copenhagen Half in September 15 before reclaiming his New York City Marathon title earlier this month.

The 26-year-old said he is eyeing a slot in team Kenya for the Games either in marathon or the 10,000m as he seeks to bag the only title missing in his trophy-laden career.

“I think I am only missing an Olympic medal and with next year being an Olympic year I am really focused on it (Olympics). If I don’t get a slot in the marathon team then I will compete in 10k,” said Kamworor.

At the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Kamworor finished a distanced 11th.

The three-time World Half marathon champion bypassed his slot in team Kenya for this year’s World Championships held in Doha, Qatar as he was preparing for the world record assault.

“I have been doing very well in the Half marathon for years and I think it was the right time to go for it,” he added.

Kamworor said the presence of his training partner and world marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge at the finish line in New York inspired him to reclaim the title he lost last year to Ethiopia’s Lelisa Desisa.

“I have been training with him (Kipchoge) and his presence at the finish line more so after running 1:59 was a huge motivation for me,” revealed the Kaptagat-based athlete.
