Kamworor hungry for more records after Copenhagen triumph

Newly crowned World Half Marathon record holder Geoffrey Kamworor believes he still has more in store, and can still further lower the distance time.

The 26-year-old who trains with the current Olympic and world marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge, lowered Abraham Kiptum’s previous mark by 17 seconds on Sunday in Copenhagen, after completing in 58:01.

Having skipped the Doha World Championships later this month in Qatar despite qualifying as the best during the national trials, Kamworor is now focusing on return to New York City marathon in November where he finished third last year, eyes on the Gold he won in 2017.

The Kaptagat based Global Athletics Club in Uasin Gichu County athlete, is not ruling out more records outside the half marathon distance.

“I’m so happy, that is a milestone I have been thinking of for some time, and I thank God for giving me the energy to accomplish it. I believe the record can still be lowered further, and there are also other records in store that I’m aiming for,” Kamworor told Citizen Digital.

The two-time World Cross Country champion said he had special plans for Copenhagen, hence the decision to skip Doha World Championships.

“I knew I needed time to rest after Copenhagen and the championship needed ample time to prepare for. Sometimes we have to make sacrifices, and taking a slot in team Kenya for Doha would have meant total focus without other distractions,” he added.

Kamworor jetted back home early Tuesday morning, and was welcomed home by elated family members and friends.
