Kamworor, Karoki set to rekindle friendly fire

World Cross Country champion Geoffrey Kamworor will renew his rivalry with Bedan Karoki on Sunday during the 26th edition of the Discovery Kenya Cross Country championship at the Eldoret Sports Club in Uasin Gichu County.

The last matchup between the two last came at the men’s 1000m finals during the Rio 2016 Games where they both failed to sparkle as Karoki came seventh, four places ahead of his compatriot.

Karoki has reported back to the country from his Japan base as he prepares his title defence while Kamworor, has just recuperated from an injury and ready to start off his season.

“We are doing the final preparations on this field, because we want our athletes to have the best track here. We have a host of elite athletes who want to open their season here in Eldoret so we must have an attractive track.

“We have some of the best Athletes in the world who were discovered here, the likes of Daniel Komen Robert Cheruiyot, Elijah Lagat, Hellen Timbilil, Rogers Rotich just to name a few,” David letting, one of the main organizers told Citizen Digital.

Kamworor missed the National Police Cross Country Championship on Saturday 21 and will be returning to the field after being declared fully fit.

“I have talked to Vivian Cheruiyot and she says she could be available because she wants to be here to test her endurance before she makes her debut in the marathon in April,” Letting added.

The organizers are targeting 3000 athletes after 2000 took part in last year’s event.

Registrations will start at 6.00am local time (+3GMT) on the same day.
