Kamworor, Ndiwa crème of Police Cross Country race

Two- time World Cross Country champion and the reigning New York City Marathon Geoffrey Kamworor shone in the sixth edition of the National Police Service Cross Country Championship held on Saturday at the Ngong Race Course in Nairobi County, covering the 10 kilometres race for men in 29:11minutes.

However, it was no easy task for Kamworor who had to endure stiff competition from Noah Kipkemboi who was competing as a guest athlete. Kipkemboi crossed the line at 29:28, while Josephat Bett came third in 29:33.

In a conversation with Citizen Digital, Kipkemboi said that the race was very tough because he had to compete with the World Champion Kamworor.

“It is my first time to participate in the National Police Service Cross Country and the race has been so hard because I competed with the fastest man, Geoffrey Kamworor,” said Kipkemboi.

Kipkemboi added that he is yet to decide the competitions to participate in this year, but is open to participating in any competition that will come across.

“I can’t decide which competition to take place whether Commonwealth or National Championship, I have to try,” added Kipkemboi.

Emmanuel Bett who had a rising form in the Athletics Kenya Cross Country series emerged fourth after finishing the race in 29:49.

In the 10 kilometres women race, Stacy Ndiwa from the Kenya Police College emerged the best, crossing the line in 34:06, as Beatrice Chepkoech settled for the second place in 34:36, and Margaret Jelimo came third in 34:44.

“The race has been very stiff but I am optimistic that I will perform well in the forthcoming competitions. I want to make sure that this year I compete in the African and the Commonwealth Championship,” said Stacy.

Stacy who took part in the 10 kilometres Marathon in France added that she is working hard to win a medal this year.

The winners will head to the National Cross Country trials that will be held on February 10 at Uhuru Gardens from whence a team to the Africa Cross Country Championship set for Chlef, Algeria on March 17 will be picked.
