Kangaru 15s team eyeing nationals ticket as regionals kickoff

Stiff competition is expected this week as the Secondary school teams clash in this year’s Eastern region Term One A games set for March 21 to 24 in Kangaru School, Embu County.

Recently crowned Embu rugby 15’s kings and the regional champions Kangaru Boys will start their title defense against Kitui County champions – Kitui School, in Pool A.

Other members of the pool are Ikuu Boys from Tharaka Nithi and Matungulu from Machakos Counties.

Kangaru’s head coach Benson Mwenda has warned their opponents they are ready for the challenge, noting their performance at the county level was just a warm up to the regional’s and nationals.

“We are ready for the games as the hosts after our last week’s win. We are confident of defending our title.

“My boys are in good shape and I know we are going to do it once again,” upbeat Mwenda averred.

The seasoned tactician noted they are in a relatively easy pool, but warned his charges of complacency ahead of the action.

“I have checked the draw and honestly only Kitui School will give us some headache. However, games are full of surprises, so let’s see what will happen from Wednesday,” Mwenda said.

The rugby giants retained their county title after trouncing St. Pauls Kevote 6-0 in finals played at Kangaru Girls last week, and are now eyeing a ticket to the nationals set for April, still in Embu.

Meanwhile, the sports powerhouse will be also be looking forward to defend the basketball title they won last year.

They are pooled together in group D with Nguutani of Kitui and Isiolo County runners up St. Pauls Kiwanjani.

Elsewhere, last year’s girls’ hockey champions and current Makueni County champions St. Joseph of Kibwezi who for a long time have dominated the game in the region, will be face off with Gategi Girls of Embu, Machakos County Champions’ Tala Girls and Waita from Kitui in Pool D.

This year’s five-day event has attracted eight counties in the region with six different disciplines in line. The participating school teams will be expected to arrive on Tuesday (Tomorrow) before the competition kick off on Wednesday.
