Kanyuambora celebrate despite Volleyball exit

Debutants Kanyuambora Boys of Highlands Region were over the moon after winning a volleyball match at the Airtel Rising Stars/Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association Term 2B Ball Games national finals in Kisumu, despite being eliminated from Friday’s semis in Kisumu.

The debutantes prevailed 3-1 in their opener against Waa before losing their next two pool stage encounters to bid the competition goodbye.

Sengera humbled Kanyuambora 3-0 in the last group clash on Thursday at Kisumu Boys Grounds to book a semifinal date with champions Cheptil High who beat Wabera 3-0 in the first semi final of boy’s volleyball.

In another match, Tetu beat Waa 3-1 to advance to the semis where they will face Malava who silenced Hospital Hill by a similar margin.

Speaking to Citizen Digital after the match, Kanyuambora head coach Peter Kiamati hailed his boys for expressing themselves despite defeat.

“I congratulate my team for coming this far and competing against very experienced sides favourably. This is the first time a team from the Highlands Region has won a match convincingly because for a long time teams from the region have not been winning even a set.

“I observed we need to do high profile build up matches if we have to match the standards exhibited at the national level. Most of the teams we played after qualifying for the nationals are far below the level of the competitors here,” explained the youthful coach.

He added some of the players in his squad could be headed to elite volleyball clubs in the country.

“We are keen to have the best players take their game to the next level as a school. Before coming for the tournament, Kenya Pipeline had engaged us through Principal Mutero Ndii on a possibility of signing our finest.

“We will keep on building the team and I am sure next year we will be back in style,” concluded Kiamati.

In girl’s category, Soweto will play Sega in the first semi before traditional giants Lugulu lock horns with Kosirai.

Kosirai blanked Furaha 3-0 while Soweto thrashed St. John’s as Lugulu quashed Gankanga by similar scores.

It was no different in Sega’s match versus Tetu, the latter mauling Sega 3-0.

All Friday matches will be played concurrently from 11:00 hrs EAT
