Kateregga seals Leopards fightback, Sharks sink

In a thrilling afternoon at the Kenyatta Stadium on Saturday, domestic giants AFC Leopards walked off Machakos with the derby bragging rights tied to their laces as they completed a 2-1 comeback win over rivals Nzoia Sugar.

It was only the first defeat in three matches for the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) newcomers but for the Leopards, it was a second straight win and perhaps the more telling yet.

Coming from a losing position, the Leopards showed great determination to collect all the three points as Gilbert Fiamenyo and Allan Kateregga each scored in a brilliant second half for the hosts after Elvis Rupia had guided Nzoia to a first half lead.

The win takes Head Coach Stewart Hall’s men second the KPL log, behind Bandari FC who whacked Muhoroni Youth 3-0 at the Mbaraki Stadium in Mombasa albeit the leaders have played an extra match over their closest pursuants.

Goals from Dan Sserenkuma, Musa Mudde and a Faina Jacobs own goal wrapped the three points for Head Coach Paul Nkata’s men as the Ugandan looks to claim a second league title in two years after guiding struggling champions Tusker FC to the crown last term.

Kariobangi Sharks, who earned their top flight promotion last term when they finished second in the National Super League (NSL), slumped to their third successive loss against Ulinzi Stars with the man of the moment Samuel Onyango scoring the lone goal.

Onyango, twice capped for the national team, has drawn praise from Harambee Stars First Coach Stanley Okumbi and Captain Victor Wanyama after his stellar displays against Uganda Cranes and DR Congo Leopards in their latest friendlies.

He scored a double as Ulinzi nearly completed an implausible CAF Confederation Cup comeback against Egypt’s Smouha SC when they bowed out of the competition 4-3 on aggregate.

Kakamega Homeboyz versus Posta Rangers produced Saturday’s only stalemate with goals from Joseph Mbugi and Joseph Okoth in each half ensuring the tie ended 1-1.

Five matches will be on the cards on Sunday with record titleholders Gor Mahia FC travelling to Western Stima while Tusker aim to bounce back at home to Chemelil Sugar.

Mathare United tackle Sofapaka FC, Sony Sugar host Thika United while Zoo Kericho FC entertain Nakumatt FC at the Kericho Green Stadium as they look to earn their first league point.
