Kayole Asubuhi bullish of Super 8 title defence chances
Kayole Asubuhi head coach Isaiah ‘Song’ Omondi believes his side is adequately prepared mentally and physically to defend the Super 8 Premier League title when they begin their defence of the crown on Saturday away to Makongeni Sports Association (MASA).
Kayole who won the title with 64 points on the final match day will put their title on the line as action kicks-off at various grounds in Nairobi County.
Being their first tie of the season, coach Omondi harbours hope on their perfect record against MASA after completing the double over them last season.
They won 3-2 in their first meeting at City Stadium last April before edging them 2-1 in the return fixture at the Camp Toyoyo grounds on July 13.
“It is our first game of the season so we are taking it as an important game since a win will be good motivation for the team to fight even harder this season.
“We are in good shape physically and mentally so there are no major concerns. The players have been training hard and we are looking forward for a good season,” Omondi who made his name as a player at Kenyan Premier League clubs Sony Sugar and Gor Mahia emphasised.
The teams will clash at Makongeni Grounds in a 3pm kick-off.
On their way to lift the league title last November, the top three teams were separated by a single point with Kayole leading with 61, one ahead of Technical University of Kenya (TUK) and Jericho All Stars two points adrift in third going into the last day.
Kayole held their nerve to win their final fixture to end the season on 64 with Jericho (61) leapfrogging TUK into second after the latter suffered a shock defeat.
Omondi does not want to take any chances this term and urged his players not to underestimate their opponents as he seeks to seal the crown with games to spare.
“Every team is aiming to snatch the trophy from us but we are prepared. We know it will not be easy to retain it but we will be aiming for the sky.
“Last season was a great experience for us in the competition and we hope to do even better this season but we will be taking it step by step,” the Kayole boss explained.
MASA-who finished sixth (48) – are aiming to kick-start the new season in resounding fashion by taking the scalp of the champions.
Their coach Hassan Andale maintains that they are ready to cover every blade of grass to upset Kayole.
“We are not under pressure; being our first league match at home I am confident that the players will give their very best on Saturday.
“We also hope fans will come out to support the team in large numbers like they have been doing,” Andale quipped.
