Kayole Starlets, Mathare share spoils in WPL

Kayole Starlets and Mathare United drew 1-1 in a bottom-table Kenya Women Premier League clash at the Camp Toyoyo Grounds on Saturday.

Christine Ngoizi opened the scoring in the 20th minute after a dominant opening half from Kayole Starlets before Kaunjeri Fauziah converted a second half penalty to level matters.

Kayole’s opening goal was a just reward for their positive start with Ngoizi finding the back of the net with a long range effort from the left channel.

Sharon Juma was superb in marshaling the defence to keep out Mathare as coach Mary Adhiambo’s charges saw out the first half with a 1-0 advantage.

Kayole resorted to keeping the ball without really going forward in the second half in an attempt to run down the clock with Mathare’s poor pressing doing little to help their search for the equalizer.

Judith Atieno squandered a golden opportunity to pull her side level when she fired a shot straight into the goalkeeper’s arms after she had won the ball with an interception deep in the opposition area.

Mathare thought they had scored when Diana Wacera headed a cross into the net but her effort was ruled off for offside.

They struck again and this time it counted from the six-yard area with Fauziah coolly converting her spotkick after Atieno had been hacked down inside the penalty area.

Mathare took their points tally to eight points, two clear of Kayole and three ahead of basement side Spedag.
