KCB coach Khayinga upbeat ahead of Genocide Memorial test

Kenya Commercial Bank women volleyball team head coach Vernon Khayinga is upbeat ahead of their debut at the annual Genocide Memorial Tournament slated for June 9-10 at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, Rwanda.

Speaking to Citizen Digital on Wednesday afternoon moments before departing for Rwanda, Khayinga said he expects stiff competition from host teams but remained positive of making it to the finals.

Khayinga is banking on ‘good quality’ of the Kenyan league to his charges win the title.

“We are ready for the challenge and our focus has been on this tournament for the last one month because it is our maiden participation and we had to prepare well.

“My players are in good shape and we are raring to go. We expect stiff competition from Rwandese teams but we are aiming to reach final,” he asserted.

The bankers are the only Kenyan representative at the event held annually to promote peace as well as honour the victims of the 1994 Genocide.

The Kenyan side is expected to face stiff competition from host teams especially defending champions APR as well as teams from Uganda, Cameroon, Congo Brazzaville, Burundi, Tanzania and Congo Kinshasa.

At the same time, national women’s volleyball team call ups Milgrene  Lituva, Lincy Jeruto, Eglay Kulova and Nancy Mulonza will headline the Vernon coached side’s 14-member squad.

The four will, however, join the national women’s team training next week after their tour of Rwanda ahead of the World Championship in Japan later in the year.
