KCB rout Kisii in Gusii as Kabras Sugar mill Leos
Defending Kenya Cup champions KCB had to toil for a 33-6 win against promoted side Kisii RFC in an enticing match played at the Gusii Stadium on Saturday.
Though the scoreline may flatter, at Gusii Stadium, things were tough with the bankers summoning their wealth of experience to tilt the scales in their favour.
Peter Kilonzo and Francis Mutai scored a brace each to boost the defending champion’s chances of defending their Cup.
KCB who had promised baptism of fire to the new recruits disappointed when their ‘code red” style of play failed to sparkle.
Peter Kilonzo dummied through the Kisii defence before sprinting 40 yards to score a superb try for KCB just before the break.
Francis Mutai picked the ball from the blind side to run over a few Kisii defenders, to score a magnificent try to the amusement of the KCB travelling fans.
Ian Mule of Kisii scored through a penalty after a KCB infringement which saw Kisii raise the intensity of the game.
Kilonzo who had a great afternoon scored his second try after he stretched to score a well worked out try from the KCB attackers for a 33-6 win.
Rocky Aguko, Arthur Owira and Esau Otieno were also on the score-sheet for the bankers, while Elphas Otieno added the extras for the champions.
In an interview with Citizen Digital, KCB head coach Curtis Olago said that the hard work by his team yielded the results.
“We had a good game though a few hiccups but we triumphed, we can only take the positives and work on the set pieces and utilizing our chances at the required moment,”charged Olago.
In other Kenya Cup ties, Kabras Sugar registered their second win of the season with a 44-13 win against visiting side, Strathmore Leos.
Debutants Kevin Keegan scored his first try on a Kabras jersey after he side stepped the Strathmore defence to score under the posts, before Andrew Gathua added the extras.
Andrew Gathua later turned from provider to scoring a superb try for Kabras after the break for a 17-13 lead. Powerhouse Max Adaka and Fabian Olando also scored a try apiece to cement their win over Leos.
Elsewhere, Kenya Harlequins floored high flying Nakuru 46-19 at the RFUEA grounds in their second game of the season.
Kenya international Isaac Adimo was stretchered off for a concussion test but that did not deter the aspirations of Kenya Harlequins.
Dennis Muhanji, Brian Beckham and veteran Peter Mutai scored a try each for a 46-19 win against the “Wanyore’.
At Impala club, table toppers Impala Saracens dismantled a strong Mwamba team 30-12 .Youngster Mark Kwemoi scored 15 points on his name before Derick Mayar and Daniel Ndome added a try each, with Kwemoi adding the extras.
The loss to Mwamba was their second in a row after they fell in their opener to Kabras Sugar last week.
At the same time, Menengai Homeboyz worked their socks off for a 29-21 win against rivals Nondies at the Jamhuri Showground. Mohammed Omolo continued with his splendid job in a Homeboyz jersey after he booted the extras before the hooter to snatch the victory from the home side.
Nondies had threatened through new arrival Moses Begi and Franz Obudo, with Filden Sinei adding the extras for Nondies.
This was the second loss to Nondies after they fell to Blak Blad in their season opener at the Kenyatta University grounds.
