KCB rout of Leos leaves coach Olago buzzing

KCB head coach Curtis Olago was left buzzing by their 50-15 crushing of Strathmore Leos over the weekend that left the Kenya Cup leaders five points clear of Kenya Harlequins at the summit of the log after 12 rounds of play.

Quins fell to Mwamba RFC 15-7 to halt their charge at the top with third placed Kabras Sugar (40) running riot 42-14 against second from bottom Blak Blood to leave the Lions out on their own in the lead on 50 points.

Former champions Nakuru who are languishing sixth (34) survived a scare from hosts Nondescripts before prevailing 20-12 with Homeboyz grounding Mean Machines 38-0 to move to fourth (37) hosts Impala edged out Western Bulls 17-15 in a closely contested encounter.

The Bankers who have won 10 matches and drawn one of in their 2016/17 Kenya Cup campaign are the side to beat as they gear up for the national play-offs.

Olago’s charged Lions ran in four tries on either half and added five conversions to record the maximum five points against the Leos who ran three tries of their own thereby denying the victors a bonus point.

Davis Chenge inspired the Bankers with a brace with Brian Omondi, Francis Mwita, Shaban Ahmed, Felix Ojow, Rocky Aguko and Ian Indimuli who returned to the squad after nursing adding the other five-pointers for the rout.

“We thought it was going to be an easy game, but Strathmore as compared to KU were quicker off the blocks which made us have a real hard time and gave them three easy tries,” the KCB boss underscored.

He added that they had to put their heads together, regrouped and restructured and that’s why we got the win.

On match day 13 on Saturday, KCB host in form Homeboyz at the KCB Sports Club.

“Upcoming games will be a bit technical than the games we have played before, so we need to correct our mistakes, get stronger in our strong points and play harder,” Olago added.

Quins surrendered to Mwamba who chalked their fifth win on the trot to continue their charge up the table.

Skipper Max Adaka returned from a six match ban to score a brace to help defending champions, Kabras hammer Blak Blad.
