KCB win Kenya Cup for a third year in a row

KCB RFC retained the Kenya Cup title defeating Kabras Sugar 23-15 in the final played at the ASK showground, Kakamega on Saturday.

Kenya 7s international and skipper Jacob Ojee scored three penalties and a try to help the bankers win their third consecutive Kenya Cup title.

KCB scored two converted tries plus three penalties against Kabras two tries converting one plus a penalty.

Playing away from home, the visitors pocketed Ksh 1 million after their magnificent display.

Ojee missed two penalties in the first half but rectified his mistakes and scored the first try for the defending champions converting for a 7-0 lead.

KCB’s Peter Kilonzo was sin binned for a rough tackle allowing Kenya international Dan Sikuta to make a nice run but was stopped by KCB scrum-half Samuel Asati.

Top try scorer Phillip Wokorach missed a penalty in his usual ground making the match more intense.

Kabras flanker Nyambua George got a pass from skipper Max Adaka after a well worked-out maul scoring the first try but Wokorach missed the conversion to make it 7-5.

Eighth-man Charlton Mokua ran in between the bankers defenders and scored Kabras second try with Wokorach adding the extras to make it 12-7.

The Ugandan player maker Wokorach added a penalty to make it 15-7. KCB resurrected in the second half scoring two tries from Ojee to make it 15-13.

Vincent Onyala scored a try for the bankers with Ojee converting it to give his team a 20-15 lead.

Ojee wrapped it with his third penalty making it 23-15 at full time.

KCB head coach Curtis Olago said that changing the game play helped his charges gain more points in the second half.
“We had to change our game play after going down 15-7 in the first half and started looking for points and that’s why we went for penalties more than tries.”

“The match was intense but we had to hold our opponents to the last minute and at last our tactics worked for our side.”

Kabras head coach Henry Du Plessis was a disappointed man slamming his charges for giving out a lot of penalties.
“We had the match in our hands but gave out a lot of penalties which made us lose the match but the boys gave their best in the match.”

Elsewhere, Kisumu RFC lifted the KRU championship trophy outshining Western Bulls 23-5.
