KCBs Olago ready for Kabras in Kenya Cup final

KCB head coach Curtis Olago wants his players to be more ruthless when they take on rivals Kabras Sugar in the Kenya Cup final at the Ruaraka grounds, Nairobi, this weekend.

Kabras have been exceptional this season keeping an unbeaten record, but have somehow struggled to maintain the run, by failing to convert open chances as the coach points out.

The last time these two heavyweights met was in round 10 of the Kenya Cup, KCB playing host to Kabras at the Ruaraka grounds. It was an epic clash, the bankers scoring seven tries and two conversions against Kabras’ two tries.

“It helps a lot that we have played Kabras several times and  we have done all our analysis already. Not much has changed, but we are not going to make the final seem bigger than it is. We just have to keep the guys relaxed in the build-up‚” Olago said.

In that last clash, KCB recall how they squandered two gilt-edged opportunities from speedster Jacob Ojee, who dropped the ball forward inside the try box in both halves of the game despite a comfortable 27-0 lead at the break.

Second stanza was more dramatic‚ where four tries from their chief tormentor Darwin Mukidza and Jacob Ojee ignited their comeback and went on to win the game with a 41-12.

In the match‚ sensation Jacob Ojee scored a great try that stemmed from a lineout and involved Kenya Simba Utility Mukidza and Scrumhalf Michael Wanjala for Ojee to send the home fans into a frenzy after a well-worked move that saw him sidestep four Kabras defender’s leaving Kabras fullback gasping for breath and helpless to score a beauty just before the half-time whistle.

Olago remembers skillful displays his charges had in the match, calling for more in the final.

“There were moves that came off perfectly as examples of what being clinical looks like. You spend time on those moves in training so it will be satisfying to see it work in a match situation especially in the final, but even with all the practice when it’s happening in a game‚ players have to make good decision.

“That is what we will try to execute come Saturday,” Olago explained.

The Bankers, who are in search of their sixth Kenya Cup silverware, walloped rivals Impala Saracens 15-0 in the semi-final to book a spot in the final. They will be inspired from their perfect record against the Millers since their promotion.
