KDF, Kenya Prisons crowned Amaco volley champions

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) were crowned the men’s winners of the 2019 Amaco International volleyball tournament after edging Kenya Prisons 3-2 (23-25, 25-17, 21-25, 25-23, 15-9) in a nail-biting final on Sunday.

KDF thus deposed General Service Unit (GSU) as champions of the event that marked its 13th edition at the Eldoret National Polytechnic where Kenya Prisons took the corresponding women’s title.

KDF, leaders in the domestic volleyball league, had eliminated Sport S of Uganda 3-1 in the last four of the tournament.

“We adhered to what our coach told us and we are happy to win this tournament. I want to assure our fans that this season we are going for the title,” KDF captain Joel Sato said.

Defending champions GSU were eliminated by Prisons after another lacklustre performance.

In the women category, Prisons beat Kenya Pipeline 3-1 (25-20,19-25, 26-24, and 25-13)

The winners in the senior category (Men and women) went home with Sh200,000 as the first runners up pocketed sh150,000 as the second runners up bagged sh75,000.

This year’s tournament witnessed a huge turnout of 93 teams including two teams from USA Boylor and Salt Factory.
