Kenya 7s meet All Blacks legend Dan Carter

The national rugby sevens team had a rare opportunity of meeting New Zealand All Blacks legend and 2015 Rugby World Cup winner Daniel Carter in Paris, France two days before the start of the Paris Sevens.

The team savoured the moment rubbing shoulders with the rugby fifteens fly half, as  Collins Injera, who is chasing the all time top try scorer title this weekend in France tagging the superstar tweeting, “It was a pleasure meeting you @DanCarter,”

Injera’s elder brother and former Kenya Sevens Captain, Humphrey Kayange had almost a carbon copy reaction to his sibling’s post posting, “Pleasure meeting @DanCarter”

Carter who retired from international rugby to play professionally in France for Racing 92 in the Top 14 premiership had a cheeky response to the star-struck Kenyans, saying, “Nice – meeting you guys too. Good luck this weekend just take it easy on the New Zealand sevens boys please.”

Kenya will face the All Blacks sevens on Saturday in their final group A game at the Stade de Bouin stadium in Paris.

The team held its first training session under cloudy conditions at the Terraine de Rugby Hippodrome D’Auteuil, located 700m from the match venue, Stade Jean de Bouin on Wednesday.

“I think this team is focused we are here to perform. Nothing is going to stop us until we get to where we have set to go, we expect nothing less than a trophy,” Captain Andrew Amonde told Citizen Digital.

The team kicks off its campaign on Friday night against Portugal.

In their last meeting at the Vancouver Sevens mid March, Kenya hammered the European side 43 – 5 in the pool stages.

The two sides have faced each other 26 times in the World Sevens series, with Kenya dominating the ratio with 17 wins to Portugal’s nine victories.

On Saturday from 11.30am local time (+3GMT), Kenya will face Russia, an unpredictable physical outfit that has beaten Shujaa 10 times in 21 meetings.

“In Paris we are going to continue ticking our small boxes, we have our little targets we need to accomplish before the Olympic games, for us the focus it’s just to continue ticking the right boxes as we did in Singapore and hopefully we will get good results on board,” speedster Injera pointed out after the team’s training.

A minimum of two victories in their pool games will earn Kenya a place in the main cup quarterfinals.

Following their history-making outing in Asia, the team knows the bar has been set high for the penultimate round of the world rugby sevens season.
