Kenya bags bronze as curtains come down on World Relays in Japan

Kenya bagged bronze in the 4x400m mixed relay as the curtains came down on the World Relay Championships in Yokohama, Japan Sunday.

After failing to make a mark in the finals of 2x2x400m mixed race on Saturday,  Kenya’s slim hopes of clinching a medal in the global event were kept alive in today’s events that also included the 4x200m men and women.

But it was the quartet of Jared Momanyi, Maureen Thomas,  Hellen Syombua and team captain Aron Koech who rounded off the victory after a nice work from Syombua as they finished third in 3:19.43 behind USA and Canada who took gold and silver respectively.

Kenya also came close to adding another medal in the men’s 4x200m with the team made of  Mark Otieno, Samuel Chege, Mike Mokamba and Alphas Kishoiyan finishing fourth after USA (gold), South Africa (silver) and Germany (bronze).

The women’s team did not finish the race after a poor baton exchange cost them.

Earlier on Kenya blew up  the chance of making it to this year’s World Championships in Doha, Qatar after finishing eighth in the women 4x400m B final.

USA came top of the overall standings with 54 points while Jamaica and Japan came in second and third respectively.
