Kenya drawn with Japan, Brazil at Tokyo Olympics

The national women’s volleyball team has been pooled to play against hosts Japan, Brazil, Serbia, Korea and Dominican Republic in Pool A of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Games.
The African representatives at the multi-sport event primed for July 24 to August 9 will be making a return to the Games for the first time since 2004 after securing the ticket during qualifiers held in Cameroon early this month.
Three-time Olympic champions China will launch their 2016 title defence in Pool B against back-to-back Volleyball Nations League (VNL) gold medallists USA, Russia, 2018 World Championship runners up Italy, Argentina and Turkey.
Paul Bitok’s Malkia Strikers will be eyeing to make a mark at the global event by winning their maiden match at their third appearance but face an uphill task against the top ranked teams.
Kenya’s fiercest opponents in the pool are; Serbia who are the reigning world and European champions as well as 2016 Olympic silver medallists, Brazil two-time Olympic champions and hosts who have also clinched the title in two different times.
The Men Africa’s representatives Tunisia have been drawn in Pool B with three-time Olympic champs Brazil, three-time podium toppers USA, four-time gold medallists and reigning VNL champions Russia and the teams of Argentina and France.
The 12 qualified teams per gender have been split into two single round-robin pools of six, with the top four in the standings of each pool to advance to the quarterfinals.
The teams were assigned to pools in line with the serpentine method, with hosts Japan placed in the first position in Pool A and the remaining squads ordered by their positions in the FIVB World Ranking.
In the quarterfinals, each pool winner will meet the fourth-placed team from the other pool, while a draw will determine the opponents of the second-placed and third-placed teams which will be from the other pool as well.

Pool B: China- USA- Russia- Italy- Argentina- Turkey
Pool A: Japan- Poland- Italy- Canada- Iran- Venezuela
Pool B: Brazil. USA- Russia- Argentina- France- Tunisia
