Kenya eyeing Zambia scalp in Copa Coca-Cola semis

Jacob Onyango’s solitary goal handed Kenya a 1-0 win against Uganda to storm into the semi-finals of the ongoing Copa Coca-Cola  Africa Cup tournament on Thursday morning,  at the Nakuru Boys grounds.

The in-form emerging goal poacher smashed the all important goal four minutes into the second half after a beautiful trade of passes with winger Christopher Raila, to book a date with Zambia on Friday morning for the final spot.

The two neighboring teams wasted open chances in the first half with their shot stoppers also proving mercurial to leave it at 0-0 at the end of second stanza.

Following his heroics, Onyango tops the scoring charts with five goals having netted against Ethiopia in the opening match on Monday, as Kenya humbled the latter 11-1.

Kenya’s last four opponents Zambia, downed a determined Tanzania 1-0 to seal their semis spot with winger Likson Ngambi handing the COSAFA side the decisive goal just at the half-hour mark of the first half.

In a post-match interview with Citizen Digital, Kenya’s head coach Peter Mayoyo lauded his charges but warned against complacency ahead of the Zambia’s clash.

“Tomorrow’s fixture is very tough and Zambia is a strong side, so we have to approach them with utmost seriousness, I however know we will sail through. I will do just one or two changes in today’s squad because we need to adjust from what we have seen in their (Zambia) matches,” told Mayoyo.

On his part, Onyango attributed his good performance to the team work enhanced by Mayoyo’s philosophy, divulging his aim to lift the top scorer’s gong.

“I thank my teammates for my good performance because this cannot be achieved without good team work. If we sustain the rhythm and momentum so far my dream to finish as top scorer will beeasy to seal,” said Onyango.

At the same time, Nigeria came from a goal down 1-0 to win 2-1 against South Africa in the other last quarter final clash, and will thus play Botswana who edged out Mozambique 3-4 in the penalty shoot-outs.

The tie ended 1-1 in the regulation time after Botswana cancelled Mozambique’s first half’s lead in the dying minutes of the second half to send the match into straight lotteries.

The inaugural competition which has attracted 12 teams will end on Saturday with finals set to be played at Afraha Stadium, Nakuru.
