Kenya lagging in preps for ParaVolley Africa Games

The national ParaVolley teams are yet to report for their residential training camp ahead of the Africa Sitting Volleyball Championships/World Cup qualifiers that will be played in Kigali from September 13-17.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Para-Volley chairman Polycarp Mboya said their target in the East African region is to secure one of the top two slots available for next year’s World Para-Volleyball Championships scheduled for July in Netherlands.

Some of the countries that have confirmed their attendance for the five-day tournament include Tanzania, Uganda, South Africa, Algeria, Morocco, Nigeria and Egypt who have already qualified for the World Championships.

“We are currently doing non-residential camp which we started last week. We’d agreed with the Government to support the program for about 20 days prior to the tournament,” Mboya said after their training session at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Kenya was initially supposed to host the championships in May 15-22 but pulled a last minute withdrawal citing financial constraints. In effect, the rights were given to Rwanda, who will be hosting the event for the second time running after the 2015 edition.

It will be a third trip for the men’s team as the women make their second trip since 2010 (They missed out in 2015). Both will be looking forward for their maiden international debut should they be successful at the Rwandan capital.

Mboya added that they are hoping to send a contingent of 35; 12 men, 12 women and 11 officials. The teams are expected to depart on September 9.
