Kenya Lionesses finish 12th at Dubai Sevens

Kenya Lionesses ended their Dubai Sevens tour with a seventh place finish after losing 5-19 to Fiji in the 11th place play-off staged in the Gulf state’s Sevens Stadium.

Kevin Wambua’s charges found themselves trailing 10-0 by halftime after Fiji converted two unconverted tries through Mereula Torooti and Roela Radiyivuni in the 4th and 6th minute.

Lionesses leading scorer, Janet Okelo’s unconverted try brought Lionesses back in to the game with just over three minutes to play in the second half, but Mereula Torroti broke through the Kenyan defence to restore the gap after a lovely play from Naina Baleca to offload.

Wambua’s side tried to haul themselves back in the game with a good take from their opponent’s lineout, but a scrum went against them losing the ball to the Fijians.

With no time left and Kenya staring at a heavy defeat they decide to kick in to touch leaving Fiji to take the 11th place, winning 19-5.

Earlier Friday, Kenya lost 7-24 to Spain in the semi finals of the semi finals of the Challenge Trophy.

In Day One, Lionesses lost all pool matches losing 7-34 to New Zealand in the opening match, followed by a 12-27 lose to Ireland.

They lost their last pool match to Russia 19-0 to go down to the Challenge Trophy semi finals.

Wambua charges will be remembered in this year’s Dubai Sevens for a fantastic play by Janet Okelo with a lovely run shifting outside the Spainish defense to have a clear run at the try to put Kenya level at half time playing against Spain.
