Kenya Lionesses out to emulate Morans in FIBA Afro Basket

The national ladies basketball team Lionesses will face-off with Mozambique and Cape Verde in a fair looking Group D of the FIBA women Afro Basket tournament set to tip off from August 10 in Dakar, Senegal.

The Lionesses secured the second position in Zone Five championships after trailing to Egypt in the final driving the Kenyan side to the FIBA Afro Basket where they last featured in 2013.

Ronnie Owino and Everline Kedogo charges have already set up training at the Nyayo National Gymnasium ahead of the continental showdown.

The ladies team will be aiming for honours just weeks after Kenyan men basketball team Morans pulled a surprise performance in the FIBA AfroCan competition bagging silver at the just concluded tournament in Bamako, Mali.

Lionesses will be banking on KPA’s free scorer Vilma Achieng and Equity Hawk’s Betty Kananu who have been on  top form in the league matches with Achieng sinking 30 points in last weekend’s tie.

Queen of rebounds Felmas Keronga who bundled the best rebounder award in Zone Five championships will also be on the hunt for more honour, amid other basketball aces including 3-pointer lass Hilda Indasi.

The competition will see 12 teams clustered in groups of three with top teams in each group earning qualification to the quarter finals with the second and the third positions heading to knock-out stages.

The Lionesses leave for Senegal on August 8.
