Kenya on top of the world after superb WU20 show

Kenya retained the overall title as curtains came down on the World Under-20 Championships Sunday evening at Kasarani Stadium.

In an evening of bountiful harvest, Kenya bagged a whooping eight medals; three gold, one silver and four bronze to take the total tally to 17 medals; eight gold, two silver and seven bronze.

Alongside defending her title, Kenya also surpassed her medal tally of 11 medals from the 2018 championships held in Tampere, Finland.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi (800m), Purity Chepkirui (1500m) and Amos Serem (3000m steeplechase) bagged gold medals.

Zena Cheptoo who had finished fourth in the women’s 5000m was handed a lifeline when Melknat Wudu of Ethiopia and Prisca Chesang of Uganda who had placed second and third were disqualified for lane infringement.

Noah Kibet (800m), Winnie Chemutai (1500m) and Simon Koech took home bronze medals.

Similarly, the quartet of Joshua Wanyonyi, Elkanah Kiprotich, Kennedy Kimeu and Peter Kithome bagged a rare bronze in the men’s 4x400m relay.

The next edition of the World Under-20 Championships will be held next year in Cali, Colombia.
