Kenya Premier League unveils new sponsor

Kenya Premier League (KPL) Limited unveiled a new sponsor that will take up the position currently held by Tusker.

The deal will see the league change its name to SportsPesa Premier League as a commercial name for the next four years.

The previous deal signed in 2013 was at the tune of Sh270 million and is set to expire at the end of the current season.

SportPesa has also unveiled a plan to ensure the national football team, Harambee Stars, qualifies for the 2022 World Cup.

As part of the deal, the company will take up the responsibility of security in the stadia in efforts to improve the standards of the league.

Gor Mahia chairperson Ambrose Rachiel praised the move saying it will help strengthen clubs in the premier league.

“One of KPL’s main objectives is to secure and to use sponsorship and other revenue streams to strengthen the future of our leagues and clubs,” said Rachiel.

Rachiel, who is also the premier league chairperson, said the partnership between KPL and SportPesa will go a long way towards meeting the league’s objectives.

On his part, SportPesa CEO Ronald Karauri said the company seeks to promote the Kenyan league’s ranking in the continent.

“Our desire is to make SportPesa Premier League the leading premier league in Africa,” he said.

It is not yet clear how much the sponsorship is for, though inside sources place it at around Sh300 million.

The deal is set to run from 2015 to 2019.
