Kenya routs Chinese Taipei to earn India rematch

The national football team Harambee Stars earned a playoff finish at the Hero Intercontinental Cup after routing Chinese Taipei 4-0 to climb above New Zealand into second on Friday evening.

Kenya had needed a huge win margin against tournament minnows Chinese Taipei in order surpass New Zealand on goal difference and Jockins Atudo stepped up to be the unlikely hero with a rare defender’s brace.

Chinese Taipei had managed to hold out Stars to a barren draw at the break but a second half implosion allowed Dennis Odhiambo to score the opener before Atudo doubled the advantage from the spot three minutes later.

At that point Kenya were needing just one goal to replace New Zealand in second behind hosts India and Timothy Otieno provided it in the 70th before Atudo got the insurance two minutes from time to complete his brace.

Stars will thus get the chance to atone for their 3-0 defeat to India in the opening round when the two sides meet in the play-off final.
