Kenya stuns Cameroon to set up Senegal clash

The national women’s volleyball team mounted a stunning rally to defeat Cameroon and finish top of Pool B of the African Nations Championship in Cairo, Egypt on Thursday night.

The Malkia Strikers cut back a two-set deficit to win 3-2 as they earned themselves a favourable semi-final clash against Senegal who were runners-up in the other group.

Cameroon won the first two sets 25-18 and 25-16 before the Kenyans hit back with 27-25 and 30-28 victories and taking their opponents out with a 15-10 win in the tie breaker.

Defending champions Cameroon will thus will thus play Egypt in the other last 4 matchup on Saturday.

“We were not fully in the game compared with our opponents but key players changed the game and we were able to gain control of the game,” head coach, Shailen Ramdoo told Citizen Digital.

With now the focus set on the semi-final brawl with the West Africans, Veteran setter Jane Wacu Believes the comeback will be a source of inspiration for the team to get better.

“We thought we were losing it 3-0, but these girls have the stamina and I know Cameroon now respects us. I believe we will play them again in the final and we won’t let Kenyans down, we are coming home with the trophy,” Wacu said.

She also called on Kenyan fans in Egypt to turn up in large numbers to support the Kenyan girls as their opponents are getting enormous applauds from football fans who are in Egypt to support their Men’s football teams in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Malkia Strikers lost in straights sets two years ago to Cameroon in Yaoundé, after winning the title three years in a row here.
