Kenya7s find way back against Spain in Paris

Still reeling from a dispiriting defeat in the hands of the French, Kenya sought to stabilize the proverbial ship against the Spanish Almada that had been crushed 31 – 0 in their opening Pool C match by England.

It was a chance for the Kenyans to get themselves back on board and they took it by their stride, picking a 26-14 win.

Spain had the possession for almost three minutes but it culminated in a turnover by Shujaa who utilized the little possession they had to score as captain Andrew Amonde led by example.

Sammy Oliech converted the try for a 7 – 0 score midway into the first half. The riposte was immediate from the Spanish as Pablo Fontes drew the two sides level capitalizing on some slack defending from Kenya.

Spain’s captain Igor Genua added the extras. A cheeky kick off by Spain’s try scorer backfired as it failed to attain the requisite distance and following the ensuing penalty; Kenya restored their lead with Billy Odhiambo scoring Shujaa’s second try. 30 secocnds into the second half, Dennis Ombachi stretched Kenya’s advantage with their third try. Oliech converted it successfully.

Jaike Carter showed his pace and power to revive Spain’s hopes of a comeback. Captain Igor Genua slotted the conversion from a difficult angle and the difference was five points. Head coach Innocent Simiyu rung the changes and Eden Agero, Nelson Oyoo were brought in.

The impact was immediately felt as the duo combined for Kenya’s fourth try.  Agero scored the resultant conversion to seal the victory by 26 – 14.

It’s all to play for in Kenya’s final group game against England at 8.26pm to determine their cup quarterfinal hopes.
